Description

This is the Original (1sh) 1930 Window Card
THE BENSON MURDER CASE
.  It was used by
Paramount
to promote this movie when it was released in 1930.  It is not a reprint nor a reproduction.  The movie stars
William Powell, Willian "Stage" Boyd, Eugene Pallette,
Paul Lukas, Natalie Moorhead, Ricahrd Tucker, May Beatty, and E.H. Calvert.
THE BENSON MURDER CASE was directed by Frank Tuttle.
This original Window Card measures 14" x 22", and has never been Folded.
This original, restored, Window Card is graded C8.5, Very Fine to Near Mint.
Original movie Lobby Cards are graded as follows from the top down: C10 (Mint), C9 (Near Mint), C8 (Very Fine), C7 (Fine/Very Fine), C6 (Fine or Very Good), C5 (Good to Very Good), C4 (Good), etc.   Prior to restoration this Window Card was gradedC7.5 Very Fine Minus.
Restoration corrected a. very light stains and
foxing throughout the Window Card;
b.
Fading of Lettering “The Greatest of them all” and “as Philo Vance”.
c.
Stain to the right of “THE” in the Title and above the “O” in “BENSON”;
d.
Spot on the bottom between the “c” and “a” of “case”;
e.
2 pin holes at the top border;
f.
Tear on the left border, left of “Greatest”;
g.
Crease at top left corner (still visible after touchup under extreme close inspection and bright light).
The Window Card now has a superb appearance and is immediately ready could be framed and presented for display with spectacular results.  Proper framing will minimize the border and corner tip minor flaws.  The image of
William Powell (aka Philo Vance)
is simply stunning.
There is really tiny writing on the bottom left and bottom right of the Window Card.  We tried to capture that lettering for your reference in the photos (see photos 7 and 8) but to ensure you know exactly what they say and mean we will write it here and explain it to our best ability.
On the right bottom it says "
This Poster Leased from Paramount Famous Lasky Corp
".
"Paramount studios original title was Famous Players Lasky before the name Paramount was used. The previous title was adapted/revised through the years until the mid-late thirties when Lasky was no longer used."
On the bottom left it says "
1
996 COUNTRY OF ORIGIN U.S.A.
"
The Country of Origin U.S.A. is evident.  The number "1996" is not a date, "
1996" is the
specific
and unique Window Card lithograph (or litho) number
assigned to this original Window Card of
THE BENSON MURDER CASE
by
Paramount
.  That said, we were unable to determine exactly how or the reasoning for the litho numbering system used by
Paramount
or any other film distributor.  But if you look into other original Window Cards, you will see a litho number - usually on the bottom left - which often looks like a date (i.e. having four numbers).  If you need additional information, or have
additional
clarification for the assignment of these litho numbers, we would be glad to hear from you.
We believe that the original 1930 Window Card
THE BENSON MURDER CASE
has tremendous
investment value.  It is a highly valued One Sheet (27" x 41") on the original movie poster site
IGUIDE
(top price range of ,000 for a C8 Very Fine, unrestored One Sheet).  Further, we have not seen many, or any, originals -
and we mean originals, issued and used in 1930, like this one
- of
THE BENSON MURDER CASE
in any format (One Sheet, Window Card, Insert, etc.) on the internet, although our search was not exhaustive and they may be out there somewhere.  Also, after restoration, this original 1930 Window Card is basically flaw free in its main image and displays beautifully with a C8.5 Very Fine to Near Mint grading. Finally, at least to us, we find the image of Powell to be simply stunning, with the entire Window Card otherwise being simplistic in its images and lettering, which blends perfectly with Powell's (Philo Vance:)) image.
